MAIN ACTIVITIES AND OUTPUTS

WP1. Data collection and analysis

The information about natural resources, biodiversity and recreational use of nature will be collected into the common spatially explicit database for the Muezerskiy and Kostomukshskiy regions from Russian side and provinces of Ilomantsi, Lieksa, Kuhmo from Finnish side.

The detailed database structure will be developed within the project taking into account the border area restrictions. The common database will be located in both countries. The automatic mechanisms for the data synchronization would allow updating the data in Finland and Russia. The access to the data will be provided to project partners and stakeholders panel members. Project partners will be responsible for maintaining the database after the end of the project.

Output: Analysis of various cross-border value chains

WP2. The value chains modeling and analysis

As a result of the value chain analysis the future landscape with more intensive and sustainable use of nature resources will be calculated. This forecasted landscape will be used as one of the input for integrated landscape planning.

Output: 1)Analysis of new logistical chains for energy utilization and extraction of natural resources.2)Cross-border natural resources management plans aimed for profitable business and multiple use of nature & conservation.

WP3. Methods for joint landscape inventory, planning and monitoring

For the planning sustainable Karelian Landscapes the existing methods in Finland and Russia will be identified, reviewed and harmonized. The evaluation of different inventory and planning methods (remote sensing, field study, other) will allow to fill the gaps of sectoral planning in the landscape. Based on the analysis of the different landscape inventory and planning methods the possibilities and limitations for developing the integrated Finnish-Russian landscape plan will be documented.

Output: Evaluation of the natural resources management risks associated with climate change.

WP4. Planning sustainable Karelia landscapes

At the planning phase the gathered data will be analyzed by new reviewed methods. The areas for sustainable nature use intensification, valuable habitats, cultural sites and valuable tourism areas will be outlined. Then the vision for future cross-border landscape development will be mapped via consultations with the stakeholders (WP5). The past and present processes determining land use change, at various spatial/ time scales would allow assessing the land use scenarios for the future.

Output: 1)Joint integrated landscape plan for ecological connectivity along the border within the target area.2)Concrete examples of profitable multiple use of natural resources.

WP5. Establishing cooperation platform and communication

By applying participatory landscape planning principles using the communication plan the cooperation with the key stakeholders will be intensified. As a result the Communication Platform will be established for specification of cooperation targets.

Output: Training seminars on improved natural resources management practices, new business opportunities in tourism and forest energy.

WP6. Visibility actions

A number of visibility actions will be implemented to communicate the project results, support the participation of the stakeholders, and identify new stakeholders.

Output: Up to date common database on natural resources within the cross-border regions of Finland and Russia.
