UNESCO and the MaB Programme


UNESCO

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO is one of the United Nations specialised agencies. UNESCO’s core task is to promote peacebuilding, poverty reduction, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, science, culture and communication.

 

UNESCO has five main themes to its programmes

- education
- natural sciences
- social and human sciences
- culture
- communication and information.

 

UNESCO gives normative guidance through agreements and recommendations, as well as organises intergovernmental conferences and high-level political forums. UNESCO is perhaps best known for its World Heritage Sites. Organisation has several development cooperation programmes and science programmes. UNESCO is also an active publicist and statistician. UNESCO’s international science programmes include, for example, International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP) and Man and the Biosphere Programme (MaB).



Man and the Biosphere (MaB) programme

Man and the Biosphere (MaB) programme was launched in the 1970s. The MaB programme seeks to improve the relationship between people and the environment. In practice, this is implemented in biosphere reserves. They form a global network known as the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
