BIOSPHERE RESERVE PROJECTS WERE REPRESENTED AT THE GREEN BELT CONFERENCE IN RUSSIA KARLANDS (Sustainable Karelian Landscapes) and EET (Eco Efficient Tourism) projects took part at the Green Belt of Fennoscandia Conference in Russia 8-11 October.
The Conference aimed to discuss the matters and work out solutions based on existing international documents and treaties (Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation on the development of the Green Belt of Fennoscandia, Convention on Biological Diversity, etc.) ******************* EET, KARLANDS, and MULTIEFFORTprojects are funded by the European Union, the Russian Federation and the Republic of FinlandBIOSPHERE RESERVE SUPPORTS SUSTAINABLE PROJECTSNorth Karelia Biosphere Reserve is working with various projects and local based companies with an aim of sustainable regional development and key focus on improved wellbeing of local Karelians in addition to nature .Some of the ongoing projects are:
a. Sustainable Karelian Landscapes Sustainable Karelian Landscapes(KARLANDS) strives towards integrating landscape planning and monitoring, with a vision to bridge the use of natural resources (stone, metals, land, wood, animals and fish) with biodiversity maintenance and supporting sustainable recreational use of nature along the Finnish-Russian border.Read more
b. Eco Efficient Tourism The eco efficient tourism project (EET) aims at developing the quality of services along the blue road in Finland and Russia.

EET project will update information boards about local tourist services visible on the blue road in Russia and in Ilomantsi, help facilitate stop over sites as well as make aware to locals’ importance of eco efficiency of those areas. Waste management will be one of the key areas throughout the project period.
c. MULTIEFFORT Photo: Photos from seminar: Fire prevention in Karelian parts of Finland and Russia -27.9.2013, IlomantsiMULTIEFFORT(Multiple Eco-Friendly Forest Use) actions restore traditions in cultural services; maintaining old traditional uses of forest products and developing them in changing society, in addition to raising an interest to non-wood forest resources and values. Regulating services (prevention of forest fires, carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation) are also addressed by the project.
