Biosphere reserves are part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MaB) programme.

Biosphere reserves are managed at national level and required to report regularly and share research outcomes within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).

Pohjois-Karjalan biosfäärialuetta hallinnoi ympäristöministeriö ja paikallinen elinvoimakeskus eli Itä-Suomen elinvoimakeskus (aiemmin Pohjois-Karjalan ELY-keskus).

Pohjois-Karjalan biosfäärialuetoiminnan ohjauksesta vastaavat työvaliokunta sekä neuvottelukunnan tyyppinen ohjausryhmä, jotka edustavat sekä aluetta että toiminnan keskeisiä sisältöjä. Itä-Suomen elinvoimakeskuksen biosfäärialuekoordinaattori koordinoi toimintaa alueella.

This functioning of the North Karelia Biosphere Reserve is achieved through cross-sectoral collaboration, partnership network and development projects. It is based on voluntary agreements between different actors, such as municipalities, businesses and associations.
