Sustainable Villages project

Sustainable villages of North Karelia -project

There are currently three Sustainable Villages projects underway in North Karelia. The projects are funded by Leader funding through Vaara-Karjala Leader ry, Joensuu Region Leader ry, and Keski-Karjala Jetina ry. The project area covers the entire region. The projects are lead by The Association for Rural Culture and Education.

The goal of the Sustainable Villages initiatives is to create environmentally wise and sustainable village communities in rural areas.

The aim of the projects for the years 2024 – 2026 is to get at least 50 villages or other rural communities to participate in the planning and implementation of concrete environmental actions. Villages are also encouraged and assisted in preparing new environmental projects and applying for funding. The Sustainable Villages projects in North Karelia are implemented in close cooperation with various partners, including the North Karelia Biosphere Reserve.
